Badminton Racquet Gripping Technique- How to Hold the Right Way

Knowing how to grip your badminton racquet is essential, as such, so is the type of grip attached to your racquet. Forehand Grip    

It is important and easy to learn how to hold the racket so that players can have fun and execute different shots with ease. This grip is the one of the basic grip and the mother of other grip techniques. A forehand grip techniques are generally used to hit shots that are on the forehand side and around the head shots.

  •  Hold the racket head with your non-playing hand side so that the handle points towards you.
  •    Place your playing hand on the handle as if you are trembling hands with it.
  •    There shall be a V shape in between your thumb and your pointer finger.
  •     The racket handle shall rest loosely in your fingers for higher flexibility.
  •    Try shorten hold so that you can place it closer  to the shaft to improve control and accuracy when serving or hitting from the forecourt and midcourt.

Backhand Grip

The grip that is used to hit shots on the backhand side of your body is known as Backhand Grip. To apply backhand grip-

  •   Hold the racket as you would on a forehand grip.
  •   Move the racket in anti-clockwise so that you can turn the V shape towards left.
  •   Position your thumb against the back bevel of the handle for higher level and power.
  •  The racket handle shall also relax loosely in your fingertips.
  •  Try  shorten hold and position it closer to the shaft to improve control and accuracy when serving or hitting from the forecourt and the midcourt.

Although there is various gripping technique, the forehand and backhand grips are the most popular and the only ones required for beginners. In this regard, the task would be changing between the forehand and the backhand grips.

Interchanging the Grips

To interchange grips, you need to hold the racket flexibly. A comfortable grip allows for better control and supply of power. If you hold the racket very tightly, then you risk hand muscle injuries. The best way to prevent this and always be ready is having a relaxed grip or a long grip. With a relaxed grip, you can quickly change from forehand to backhand and from a loose grip to a tight grip automatically.

The most common and basic are the forehand and backhand gripping Technique. If you master these two gripping technique, you are in a better position to be trained more gripping techniques and interswitching them.


There are various gripping techniques used by professional players, but starting with a correct badminton grip is the foundation of playing badminton. Holding the racket wrongly will reduce your stroke’s power and accuracy.
